For Your Information shares announcements of events, public meetings, notices, classes and deadlines relevant to CSUN faculty and staff. The submission deadline is noon on Monday, one week before the next post.

The deadline for the Nov. 10 posting is Monday, Nov. 3.

We strive to include all items submitted by deadline occurring until the next post. You can submit future items by emailing  pubinfo@csun.edu, sending them to mail drop 8242 or faxing them to (818) 677-4909. Email is the preferred method of submission.

EOP Free Speech Event
CSUN students, faculty and staff are welcome to freely express their thoughts, views and opinions in Matador Square from 11:30a.m.-2 p.m. Participants are welcome to deliver speeches, perform spoken word and/or express their thoughts through music, art or dance on any topic. This is a free event and the entire CSUN community is welcome to participate. If you are faculty or staff, you can show your support by encouraging students to participate.

Psychology’s Got Talent!
Psychology Department students, faculty and staff will be performing at the
5th Annual Talent Show, Exhibition and Silent Auction in the Grand Salon. A suggested donation of $5 will be asked for at the door. All proceeds will support the Department of Psychology “Creative Endeavors” Scholarship. The doors will open at 6 p.m. and the show will begin at 7 p.m.

Advertising in Living Color
Jo Muse, CEO of Muse Communications, will discuss the cultural and demographic shifts that impact modern advertising in the USU Flintridge Room from 12:30-1:30 p.m. The event is sponsored by Office of Research and Graduate Studies Distinguished Visiting Speakers Program.

Carmen
The re-envisioned opera, Carmen will fill the VPAC’s Great Hall stage with the heat and passions along the U.S./Mexican border. This riveting tale of love and jealousy was Bizet’s final work, breaking barriers and paving the way for a whole, new realistic form of opera. Directed by Maurice Godin, Musical director John Roscigno.

Africana Studies Open House
The 45th celebration of the department will kick off with an open house hosted by Africana Studies, on the mezzanine of Santa Susana Hall from 3-6 p.m. The department, which recently changed its name, will showcase its new branding and logo as well as different black organizations at CSUN. This is the first event of Africana Studies Week, celebrating the department’s 45 years on CSUN’s campus.

Black Bag Discussion
Africana Studies professors Marquita Gammage and Theresa White will share their current research in the USU’s Pasadena Room from 3-5:30 p.m. Snacks and coffee will be served and the event is open to all CSUN community. This event is a part of Africana Studies Week celebrating the department’s 45 years on CSUN’s campus.

45th Anniversary Keynote Lecture
Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o will speak on from 2-3:30 p.m. in Cypress Hall 158, Music Recital Hall. This event is jointly sponsored by the Department of Chicana/o Studies, also in celebration of the founding of that department. The event is free and open to all students, faculty and staff. There will be live music and performers along with catered lunch.

Nov. 6
Women in Los Angeles Politics
Los Angeles, the second largest city in the nation, has witnessed a decline in the number of women holding elective office in recent years. Current City Councilmember Nury Martinez, former City Controller and mayoral candidate Wendy Greuel, and former City Councilmember Joy Picus will discuss their experiences as women serving in elective office in the city of Los Angeles, as well as the challenges that women face in seeking elective office in the city. The event held in the Jack & Florence Ferman Presentation Room in the Oviatt Library will begin with a reception hosted by the CSUN Office of Government and Community Relations between 6 and 7 p.m., followed by the panel of speakers from 7 to 8 p.m.

Discussions on Police Brutality
Film screening of the movie Fruitvale Station, an Africana Studies Intergenerational Community Forum and a panel on police brutality will conclude African Studies Week. A panel discussion with leaders involved in the “anti-police brutality” movement in Los Angeles will discuss current events involving Mike Brown, Ferguson and Ezell Ford. The screening and discussion will be held in the USU Theater from 3:30-9 p.m.

Bianchi Planetarium
Come and learn about stars, constellations and planets visible in the sky during Autumn at the Autumn Sky Show, which takes place at 7:30 p.m. It is followed by MAVEN – the Latest Mission to Mars. General admission tickets are $6 for one show and $10 for two shows; students are $4 for one show and $7 for two shows.

Dealing with Workplace Violence and Fear or Threats of Violence Part I
The Department of Police Services will present a workshop designed to familiarize staff with the range of university resources available and how to activate those resources when responding to a variety of behaviors that may cause concern within the employee’s department. The class is scheduled to take place from 9:30-11 a.m. in the department’s 2nd floor training room.

The Basics of Pepper Spray Defense
The Basics of Pepper Spray workshop, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at CSUN PD, covers a variety of topics including citizens’ possession and use, chemical properties and effects of pepper spray. Registration is free but a personal canister of pepper spray with keychain case can be purchased for $6.

First Time Home Buyer’s Seminar
The University Corporation will host its fourth annual First Time Home Buyer’s Seminar for Faculty and Staff at the Orange Grove Bistro from 4-6 p.m. The seminar will educate the attendees about the in’s and out’s of purchasing a home in today’s real estate environment. The panel will focus on understanding the role of the real estate buyer’s agent, the importance of choosing the right lender, how you hold title to your property, the meaning and use of escrow, and lastly, understanding the legal aspects of property disclosure documents prior to signing them.

2015 Faculty Retreat
The 2015 Faculty Retreat, “CSUN: Celebrating Diversity” will be held Jan. 12-13, 2015. The first day will be on the CSUN campus with the usual schedule. On the second day, faculty will have an opportunity to go on a “walking tour” of the historic downtown Los Angeles area. Policy on Examinations and Religious Observations
Campus policy states that “in administering any test or examination, we will permit any student who is eligible to undergo the test of examination to do so, without penalty, at a time when the activity would not violate the student’s religious creed.” If a faculty member needs assistance in evaluation the request of a student for the re-scheduling of an examination for purposes of religious observation, please contact the Office of Faculty Affairs at (818) 677-2962.

Service on Faculty and University Committees and Boards
Faculty who would like to be considered for election or appointment to positions in faculty governance, to standing or advisory committees of the Faculty Senate, or to various all-university committees and boards are invited to complete the University Service Form on the Faculty Senate website. To be considered for the spring faculty elections, please submit the form to the Faculty Senate Office by Jan. 20, 2015.

Nov. 1
GCBA Application Deadline
Nov. 1 is the deadline to apply for the Spring 2015 Graduate Certificate in Business Administration (GCBA), offered by the David Nazarian College of Business and Economics in collaboration with the Tseng College. The one-year program is for those with an undergraduate degree in a field other than business who want to strengthen their foundation in business administration or prepare to enter an MBA program. The program is open to the community.

Nov. 1
MPA Application Deadline
Those who want to take CSUN’s Spring 2015 Master of Public Administration (MPA) program at Glendale Community College and at the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health need to apply by Nov. 1. The MPA degree is for those with a bachelor’s degrees who work in government, nonprofit or public-sector fields. The program is open to the community.
